Olustee will be their brand new effort in almost a decade, and it’s absolutely a cause for celebration. The album has been preceded by its lead single, “Rooster,” demonstrating the band’s signature rock and soul fusion. The band has been heavily influenced by numerous iconic bands, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Toots Hibbert, and Otis Redding. These influences helped the band create an entirely unique sound that is not only a delight to hear on record but also an absolute thrill to hear on stage! JJ Grey & Mofro’s new album Olustee follows the band’s slew of critically regarded efforts. In 2001, the band released their debut album, Blackwater, deemed one of the best soul/R&B albums of the decade. The debut effort was quickly followed by a southern funk rock record, Lochloosa, which received praise from fans and critics. JJ Grey & Mofro moved on to release seven more albums, the latest being ‘Ol Glory, which was dropped in 2015.
In 2024, the band will embark on a 39-date trek to promote their new album in almost ten years. To be released in February 2024, Olustee will be their second album under Alligator Records. In a social media post, JJ Grey mentioned his inspiration for the single “Rooster.” “I grew up with chickens all of my life. We had a rooster once named Jim-Jim, who was a natural-born badass. He was an absolute gentleman with the hens. He always called them to food, ensured the young ones got back in the coop before dark (our chickens roamed free), and never roughed the hens or other young roosters up. When the time came, he ran at the danger instead of running away and paid the ultimate price (which was no price to him at all) to save his family. Reminds me of the men I grew up with.”
