Formed in England in 1978, Duran Duran first gained popularity in the 1980s with their blend of new wave synthpop. The band were known for their poster-boy looks, sense of style and music videos, aired on the then-new music video channel MTV. These sometimes controversial videos, which included partial nudity and suggestions of sexuality, became popular in the early 1980s, and Duran Duran were among the first bands to have their videos shot by professional directors with 35 mm film movie cameras, which gave them a much more polished look than was standard at the time. They also used this video innovation in their live shows. By the late '80s, the group's most commercially successful lineup had divided, and the remaining members found difficulty regaining their previous success. However, the band had a resurgence in the early '90s as a sophisticated soft rock quartet. In 2000, lead singer Simon Le Bon approached founding member and bassist John Taylor with a proposal to reform Duran Duran's classic line-up. The band recorded on and off for a new album over the next three years and also toured sporadically. In 2015, they released Paper Gods, their 14th studio album, which debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200, the band's highest debut in 22 years. Since the 1980s, Duran Duran have had 14 singles in the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and 21 in the Billboard Hot 100, and have sold more than 100 million records.
