What started out as a duo with José Reyes and Manitas de Plata in the 1970s and later a father-and-sons band, developed into a full-scale family affair after José Reyes’ death. Cousins Diego, Paco, and Tonino Baliardo joined brothers Nicolas, François, André, Patchaï, and Paul Reyes, forming the Gipsy Kings, with their unique sound as an ode to their ancestors – the Spanish-Romani people, or “gitanos”, who fled the Catalonia region during the Spanish Civil War.
The Gipsy Kings rose to prominence after the release of their self-titled third studio album, containing the smash-hits “Djobi Djoba”, “Bamboléo”, and “Un Amor”, becoming one of the few Spanish-language albums to spend 40 weeks on the U.S. charts. The Gipsy Kings released no less than 14 albums to date, won one Grammy Award for the album “Savor Flamenco”, and received four Grammy Award nominations.
With the Gipsy Kings, the traditional single acoustic guitar became seven guitars, including a bass; Nicolas Reyes’ hoarse, passionate voice became one of the world’s most popular flamenco voices; their infectious rhythms become the beating heart of any world stage, with the only empty seats being those of people dancing in the aisles.
