Widespread Panic emerged from the jam band scene of the mid-to-late 1980s. In the 60s and 70s, the rock scene was processing the impact of Grateful Dead, and people were craving music in that same style. Eventually, by the 1980s, dozens of new bands adopted the improvisational performing style of bands like The Grateful Dead and Phish and toured the country. Bands who did so were dubbed “jam bands,” and Widespread Panic is one of the most notable. Their improved style and refusal to repeat a setlist has made their performances timeless.
