The platinum-selling classic rock powerhouse Steve Miller Band is three years short of celebrating their sixth decade in the music business. Yes, these award-winning rockers are veterans in the industry and continue to deliver nothing but hard-hitting shows worldwide. Led by the illustrious Steve Miller, the band comprises longtime keyboardist Joseph Wooten, guitarists Jacob Petersen and Kenny Lee Lewis, and drummer Ron Wikso. The band emerged from San Francisco in 1966 and released their debut single, “Sittin’ in Circles,” two years later. That same year, the band released “Living in the U.S.A,” the lead single from their sophomore album, Sailor. The single entered the Billboard Hot 100, while the album broke into the Top 30 of the Billboard 200.
Throughout the ‘60s and early ‘70s, Steve Miller Band has maintained their excellent momentum, entering the Billboard charts with each studio release. However, by 1973, the band made their incredible breakthrough when their eighth album, The Joker, peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200. The album, which notably spawned the number 1 Billboard Hot 100 title track, sold over one million copies in the U.S., earning the band its first platinum certification for an album. Meanwhile, the title track, “The Joker,” was certified platinum five times in the U.S. Today, the song remains the band’s best-selling single.
In 1976, Steve Miller Band released another number 1 hit, Rock’n Me.” The song topped the Billboard Hot 100, as well as the charts in Canada. Described by critics as the “immediate audience grabber,” the song was spawned the band’s best-selling album, Fly Like An Eagle. The 1976 effort, which peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200, sold over four million copies in the U.S. In addition to earning four-time platinum in its home country, the album also earned double platinum in Canada and gold in the U.K.
The band continued to release several critically-acclaimed efforts through the ‘80s. During the 90s, they dropped only one effort, Wide River, which was met with high acclaim from fans and critics. In 2010 the band released Bingo!, their first album in almost two decades. The record peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200, making it their highest charting release since their 1982 album, Abracadabra. The band’s exemplary contributions to the rock industry earned them a place among the music legends. In 2016, five years after releasing their last album, Let Your Hair Down, Steve Miller Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
